I just got recertified today and I was surprised that in June the American Red Cross totally changed their standards for CPR and choking.
Some of the biggest are: 1. You are supposed to do back blows followed by the heimlich for choking 2. You aren't supposed to check for a pulse at all - just start the breathing/CPR 3. You don't stop the breathing/CPR to check for anything ever - just keep going until help arrives 4. The ratio is 30-2 instead of 15-2

Wow, I was certified for years but am so rusty now. I know I should go back. So you're not supposed to check for pulse before you start chest compressions? I thought you could do damage if the heart was beating? Guess it's time to get recertified!

Nope - you can't and I guess they found that people spent so much time trying to find a pulse that it was delaying the time that they got care.
You should get recert - esp in infant/child
