Ok, what is it about kids that they feel they need to stick stuff in their orphasis. Tonight my 3 yr. old ds decided that his nose would be a good place to hide a grape. What was he thinking I have no idea??? First he comes and says he has something in his nose and he needed a tissue. I figured it was just a runny nose. He blows it and then comes back again and admits he stuck a grape in it.
I called the peditrician figuring I was going to be making a trip to the ER on the coldest night of the year. Since he didn't have any trouble breathing, he told me to try covering his mouth with mine and blowing. He said as long as it's not stuck, it should pop out. I said to try it a couple times. If not, we should wait an hour or so to see if it dislodged itself and then go to the ER.
So with a little bribery, I finally got him to let me try. Amazing enough it really does work. The first time it came down far enough that I could grab it and pull it out. I can't believe I'd never heard of this before. Of couse, I hope to never have to use it again and I don't think he'll be trying it again in the "near' future anyway.
This also explains why it is so important to pinch the nose when you are doing CPR. Otherwise all the air will go right out their nose.

I agree, kids enjoy sticking things in their noses too much! My seven year old stuck a Polly Pocket shoe up her nose around age 4. We could see the shoe, but assumed we needed a doctor to remove it. Turns out, all they use is tweezers, so a co-pay and doctor bill later, we learn the expensive lesson, that if the object is small and still visable, all you need is a pair of tweezers.

Seriously I'm just waiting for this to happen, lol. I remember my little sister putting a seashell up her nose. I think they ended up squeezing her nose to crush the shell so it'd come out in pieces. Man if we could see into the mind of a child!

OUCH Adria.
Lois seriously the visual is hillarious, but when that day comes, I will remember your advice! And the post about the tweezers too!
