With the holidays quickly approaching I thought it would be nice we share some of our family traditions. Ones that you've done since you were little and are passing on to your dc. Maybe its a new tradition that you want to start with your family. What ever it is lets share Kat

I think traditions are so important. I plan to continue most of the ones from my family but would love to start a new one or two so please share! We celebrate Christmas. Some of our traditions are: - I make oyster stew (my dh's family's tradition) and my mom makes "Christmas Casserole" for supper Christmas Eve. This is the casserole her mom always made. It's easy but the only day we have it is Christmas Eve so it's special.
- We open presents from each Christmas Eve after dinner.
- Santa generally leaves one "big" present under the tree and fills the stockings.
- Christmas Eve, after church, my siblings and I like to stay up and watch the most un-Christmas movie we can find. We often end up with B horror movies. My brother makes homemade eggnog for the refreshments.
- Christmas day my siblings and I each make a dish. We purposely DO NOT coordinate so sometimes we get an interesting combination. Last year I believe I made Coke Sandwiches (shredded roast beef cooked with Coke in the crockpot), one brother made jambalaya, another made stuffing, one made vegetarian enchiladas and my sister made dessert. It's always interesting.
- We play "Dirty Santa" on Christmas day with gifts $5 or less.

For both kids I get them an ornament in a particular theme(dd is snowman since she was born in Feb and ds is candy since he is a sugarholic LOL!) with the names and year on them. My mom had one for each of us growing up that had our names and we all thought it was the coolest thing ever. I just exanded on that theme so that both kids will be able to take them and have them for thier first tree.
We make a gingerbread house every year as well to display and to eat LOL! The kids love that and dd starts asking before Thanksgiving is even here :-)
I also have my dd make something each year for gifts. One year it was bath salts that she got to mix, last year she made all her teachers a bracelet and this year she is making homemade vanilla and those cookies in a jar for everyone. I wanted to try and make it more about the thought and effort than the actual gift. This year ds will get to join in. It should be fun!

We give the grandmoms photo calendars each year with photos from the corresponding month the year before. They love them.

I will start a new tradition this Christmastime by setting up the awesome tree that I bought last year! I can't wait! I LOVE real trees but I feel like the tree I bought (which is beautiful) is an investment, kwim? It will save me money and time on clean up!
I also allow the boys to open one present before they hit the hey on Christmas Eve.
This tradition may not seem like a big deal, but it is for me. One of the first Thanksgivings on my own with the boys was when I was about 19 or 20. We were totally broke, living in these housing projects that we called home for about 2 years. Someone gave us a turkey but I didn't know how to cook it. I figured it out and it fed us for days. This memory chokes me up to this day and reminds me of harder times when I was just a baby -- with 2 babies of my own. So for Thanksgiving, no matter what our plans are, I make a big Turkey dinner for my little family and sometimes will even invite anyone else who needs to eat!

What a wonderful Thanksgiving Day tradition D Our family is VERY close. I have 3 sisters and we enjoy getting together. Even though its sometimes hectic and pain but hey thats family for you. Well this year my mom recently moved. She use to be 5 minutes down the road then she moved and she was 20 minutes away but this time she moved 1 1/2 hours away!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has been quite an adjustment for all of us. You know you just can't drop by because you want to anymore. Every Halloween for as long as I can remember our tradition has been that we ALL (3 sisters and 15 nieces/nephews) go to my moms house for a chilli dinner and trick or treating! This year we're all starting our new tradition because my mom lives so far away now and she has a whole ONE neighbor. Wouldn't make much fun for trick or treating LOL!! So this year we're each trick or treating in our own neighborhoods. My ds who is 10 is thrilled with the idea. He told me "Cool we've never done that before" I am alittle sad and yet alittle happy but starting new traditions isn't always easy. I don't even want to think about Thanksgiving or Christmas yet! D - that is a wonderful story.
Christmas cookies are my thing - I make a ton of them using my Grandmothers/mothers/my recipee, from scratch, and spend hours decorating them. It is so fun to do with the kids now. I even use the same cookie cutters as they spend. Since my Mom passed away, it always makes me a little choked up when I pull them out.
We have some others, but that is my big one
